Legendary author Maya Angelou believes that anyone can write. While her quote is a great confidence booster, I pause at the word “ability.” Honing the ability to write is sometimes where I struggle. But, I don’t let it dissuade me from achieving my goal. I like to write — and hope to become much better at it.
I’m always seeking resources for improvement and inspiration in order to become a better writer. Recently, I stumbled upon the “10 Steps to Becoming a Better Writer”, at copyblogger.com.
In my role as a blog writer for Iyobu, I do a great deal of marketing and promotional writing and I enjoy it. Content marketing is another method that I use to drive awareness of the Iyobu brand, so writing interesting articles about subjects that are relevant to Iyobu’s audience is a writing goal I have.
Like many, I consider myself an evolving writer. I try to write weekly, at least that’s my intention—doesn’t always happen. So, I’m often in a crunch to meet a writing deadline. Being the mother of two small children, combined with the often-inevitable writer’s block, can make meeting a deadline challenging.
Recently, I sat down in the peacefulness of my home office, to churn out an article and found myself with writer’s block. As I struggled to stay focused, I was distracted—although my children were enjoying a visit with my sister—by a series of thoughts that led me to browse the MarketingProfs website (http://www.marketingprofs.com/), where I noticed an online course, Marketing Writing Bootcamp.
Having once been a MarketingProfs board member, I was familiar with the high quality of their courses, so I enrolled. I immediately downloaded one of the course items that instantly appealed to me — a 10‑minute video presentation entitled, “How to use Mindmapping to Cure Writer’s Block.” Mindmapping is a more liberating, creative technique to begin writing than the traditional, stifling use of an outline.
Ten minutes after watching the video, I began developing a mindmap for my article, and voilà — a few hours later, my article was complete.

My mindmap, although not the prettiest to look at, was effective. Distraction freed my mind from writer’s block and allowed the words to flow freely.
